Welcome!

I am gathering information on ADHD and ADD for my own use, and decided to store it here in a blog for others to reference as well. If you have any information to contribute, please feel free to comment, or e-mail me at: myAboutADHD@gmail.com Thanks for visiting, and stop by again soon!

East Coast ADHD Prevalence

This is interesting. I came across this map showing the percentage rates of American ADHD diagnoses, and there seems to be a significantly higher percentage of cases on the east coast.

Have a look for yourself:

Cognitive Training

I am currently exploring the theory that ADHD and other similar diagnoses are the result of a brain development asymmetry, which can be helped with diet,  physical and mental exercises.

The mental exercise component of this is also referred to as "cognitive training", one of the purposes of which is to train the different areas of the brain to work more efficiently together. My goal is to research and administer the training myself, so anything I discover I will post here.

More To Think About Regarding Toxins

There's so much information out there! It's hard to know what is true and what is not. All we can do is read and research, while trying to strike a balance between cautious and paranoid.

Here I'll post excerpts and links re: toxins...

Omega 3 and 6 Dose Information

Here is where I will post Omega 3 and 6 dosing information as I find it. I will post article excerpts, which will be linked to their source for referral.

"Experts say 250-500 mg/day for children between 2 to 6 years, and 500 to 1,000 mg/day for children 6 to 12 years is a good ratio. You can always check with your doctor for more information."

"It is reported that the maximum dose should not be greater than 0.5 gram per kilogram of body weight daily. Do not give supplements to a child without first talking to your doctor."

Omega 3 - Are We Getting Enough?

Below is a link to an interesting article that brings to light the concept that ADHD can be a result of improper diet, specifically lack of Omega 3. In otherwords, Omega 3 supplements help the most in children whose nutritional intake is very deficient to begin with.

Which leads us to the question: if Omega 3 was an essential part of a normal healthy diet, might there be fewer instances of ADHD diagnosis?

Pesticides and ADHD

This is my current fixation - the poison in our produce that could be damaging our children's nervous systems.

This is old news to many I'm sure, but it's my present focus. I came across the link between ADHD and the pesticide Chlorpyrifos, and when I factored in my son's love of apple peels and my daughter's aversion to them, a lightbulb went off in my head.

My son is the reason I started this research, and he is the one who cannot eat enough apples, peels and all. He also loves grapes and celery, and cucumbers with the peel. It's a shame. He loves produce, and yet may be unwittingly ingesting toxins that could be shortening his attention span, delaying his cognitive development, and even creating gross motor difficulties.

My husband and I have agree to try organic produce for awhile, to see if it makes any difference. As I write this, my son is one week away from starting grade one, where he will be faced with six long hours each day behind a desk. I wonder.. could his previous attention difficulties in Kindergarten be from something as simple as chemical toxicity?
